Obituary of Benny Pointer

On Saturday, July 31, 2021, John Benjamin Pointer Jr (Benny), passed away at the age of 80 after a long battle with colon cancer. 

 

He is survived by his wife, Theresa; his son, Jerame; his three daughters, Heather, Patricia, and Jon-Kayla; his two nieces, Amy and Emily; his cousin, George Crawford; as well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and cousins. Benny was preceded in death by his father, John; his mother, Kittie; his daughter, Vicki; his nephew, Michael; and his brother, Gilbert. 

 

Benny was born on February 20, 1941 in Remus, MI to John and Kittie (Norman) Pointer. He was a member of the Wheatland Church of Christ. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, where he earned several medals, including the Purple Heart. After two tours in Vietnam and several years in the National Guard, he was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant.

 

Benny’s experience in the Army played a very important role in his life. He gave back to his community through his role of Post Commander at the Mecosta VFW Post 2335. He was also well known throughout the community for his excellent masonry and carpentry work.

 

Benny’s life will be honored at Janowicz Family Funeral Home in Remus, MI. Visitation is scheduled for Thursday, August 5th 5pm-7pm. Funeral services will take place on Friday, August 6th at 11am (family will receive guests at 10:30 am). There will be a luncheon to follow at the Mecosta VFW.
