Obituary of James Hunter Boyd

James Hunter Boyd, age 85 of South Rockwood (formerly of Canadian Lakes, MI), passed away March 5, 2018 at his home. A funeral ceremony will be held in his honor Friday, March 9th, at 10:00 AM, at the Chippewa Hills Baptists Church in Remus, with Pastor Charles Richardson officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Battle Creek, at 2:30 PM. Friends may visit James’s family Thursday evening from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, at Janowicz Family Funeral Home in Remus, and again on Friday morning from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at the church.

James was born March 27, 1932, the son of the late Robert and Beatrice (Hunter) Boyd. After graduating high school, James joined the U.S. Navy, and proudly served his country for over three years during the Korean Conflict. An outgoing person, it was common for James to strike up a conversation with anyone who had served in the military. He enjoyed sharing his experiences and hearing about others’. He was a lifetime member of the Submarine Veterans of WWII Association, and was a member of the Mecosta Lions Club.

During his years spent in Canadian Lakes, he volunteered at the senior center offering rides to those who needed them, and was his wife’s right-hand-man when it came to decorating and caring for their church. Known as the “minister of pop cans”, James helped his church to raise $11,000 through pop can deposits.

His loving nature will be greatly missed by his wife of 18 years, Dolores; children, Robert E. (Mary) Boyd, Jeri Ann Boyd, and Joy Lynn (Jeff) Bajt; five grandsons, J.C., Trevor, Sean, Ryan, and Kyle, and numerous other family members and friends.

Those desiring may direct memorial contributions to Chippewa Hills Baptist Church, or to Leader Dogs for the Blind. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home and church.
