Obituary of Donald Norman McArthur

Don was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on May 19, 1934.  Growing up he participated in many church activities and sports events, especially hockey.  It was in Shawinigan Falls, Quebec, that he met Don Penniston, Manager of the Shawinigan Cataracts Hockey Team, (in the Quebec Senior Hockey League). He made arrangements for Don, thru Jack Adams, (Manager of the Detroit Red Wings), and N. Heliger, (Coach at The University of Michigan), to go there on a Hockey Scholarship which Don accepted two years after graduating high school.  In the interim he enrolled at Bishop University, playing Varsity Hockey. A New York Scout offered him a tryout with the Rangers but Don decided to continue with his studies.  He did have an opportunity to play a practice game against the Red Wings.  He left for Michigan in 1952 to attend University of Michigan, where he met his wife, Mildred Webber, marrying in 1954.  In 1956 Don transferred to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, in Troy, NY.  There he played hockey for Ned Harkness, former coach of the Detroit Red Wings, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in mechanical Engineering. After retiring from GM, Don and Mil settled in Canadian Lakes, MI.

Don leaves his wife Mildred of 64 years; two sons, Robert and James and his wife Della; daughter, Deborah and her husband Robert; brother, Peter and his wife Sally, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  A Celebration of Life luncheon will be held at the Highland Haus on August 17that 11:30 am.  Donations to God’s Helping Hands in Remus, or charity of your choice, would be preferred in lieu of flowers.
